On June 4 AEP announced the winners of the 2013 awards for excellence in education marketing and innovation, quality, and effectiveness in learning resources. The AEP Awards program, which has been in existence for over four decades, is the most prestigious and comprehensive recognition program in the learning resource community. Products were judged in a three-tier process (educator review, professional review, and certification) with only the best materials advancing to the higher rounds. Read below for descriptions of the top winners, including the Golden Lamp Awards (representing the best of the best in learning resources), the Gold Innovation Award (the judges’ top pick from the Innovation Award recipients), and the Gold Beacon Award (for the most outstanding education marketing piece). The National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) and the National Governors Association (NGA) have released the Fiscal Survey of the States, 2013The report shows that while states are beginning to recovery, the state legislatures may not trust the recovery. Forty-two governors are recommending higher spending levels in 2014 compared to 2013. However, the authors say, “additional budget dollars remain scarce and new spending priorities are likely to be curtailed by health care related expenditures and future health care spending demands.” Continue reading

Toby Fallsgraff, a Director on the Obama for America campaign, talked to 2013 Content in Context attendees about strategies his team used to reach voters. Just like in all email campaigns, the first task was the most difficult–getting voter to open the message. Through test, segmenting, and a lot of data analysis, they discovered that people respond to messages that reflect every day conversation. Fallsgraff and his fellow panelists on the session What’s Keeping Your Marketers Up at Night? agreed that marketers need to let go of control of the conversation. Continue reading

Parenting in the Age of Digital Technology, a new report from the Center on Media and Human Development at Northwestern University, examines how parents are incorporating old and new digital into their family lives and parenting practices. Scott Traylor, CEO of 360KID and an AEP board member, caught up with report co-author Vicky Rideout to discuss the findings and what research needs to be done next regarding parents and children.
