Curriculum
An integrated and comprehensive
kit for use in a school environment to teach or support a particular
subject area. This may be a multimedia product. Curriculum
Packages are considered instructional materials. You MUST submit
teacher instructions in order to be judged. If the product
comes in multiple packages, please clearly indicate what pieces
make up your “sample.
Reading and Language Arts -
Resources that help teach the skills, including reading, composition, speech,
spelling, and dramatics that give students a thorough proficiency
in using the language.
Mathematics -
Materials that teach the systematic treatment of magnitude, relationships between
figures and forms, and relations between quantities expressed
symbolically.
Social Studies - Products
that include instruction in history, geography, civics, etc.
ESL/ELL - Materials
that aid in the teaching of English to nonnative speakers
in an English-speaking environment.
Science - Materials
that promote the systematic
knowledge of the physical or material world gained through
observation and experimentation.
World Language - Resources
for teaching
a language known or spoken in many countries.
Special Education -
Materials that aid in education that is modified or particularized
for those having singular needs or disabilities.
The Arts - A broad subdivision
of culture, composed of many expressive disciplines. The
arts encompasses visual art, creation and appreciation
(decorative arts, crafts, fine art), performing arts,
music performance and appreciation, language arts, culinary
arts, and physical arts.
Reference Resources (all
subjects) - Products that can be used across
all subjects to support instruction, but are not enough
to be used for complete understanding of a topic. Some
examples are glossaries, encyclopedias, or picture dictionaries.
Self-Guided Materials
(all subjects) - Supplemental resources
that come without teacher guides or instructions—fiction
or non fiction books, graphic novels, posters, and
how-to books. All of the learning components are incorporated
into the product as in integral part of the main text
or content, and the self-guided learning from the product
can be done without an instructor. Additional support
for the reader or user may also be available, including
a glossary, fun facts, and a book and/or web site reference
list. This category encompasses all subject areas and
can be single products or sets of products.
Teaching Aides (all subjects)
- Tools used to enhance and support instruction for a
subject area that could include posters, games, flash
cards, and other manipulatives.
Periodicals
If you want to have your periodical judged based on its editorial,
design, or on these elements combined with the mission of your
publication, then these are the categories for you.
Departmental Column -
A group of articles easily identifiable as a regular feature
of the publication, with a consistent style and tone. Special
entry requirement: submit samples of half the columns published
throughout the year.
Feature Article -
A special or prominent article, focusing on an inherently
interesting practice, topic, event, personality, or group
that informs, advises, or entertains.
Editorial - A brief
essay written specifically for the publication that presents
a significant opinion about a timely, substantive issue.
How-to Feature -
An article that instructs the reader on a specific subject,
with or without step-by-step instructions.
Interview/Profile -
A published discussion or question-and-answer between a
subject and an interviewer.
Learned Article -
An article of substantial length based on research dealing
with an education related issue. It offers original findings
or builds on existing work to reach well-grounded conclusions
presented in clear, jargon-free, and unambigious writing.
News Story -
A timely, journalistic article about a significant event
or issue. It includres a compelling title, deck, and lead;
logical oranization; and a "newsy" style.
Fiction - An individual
piece of fiction or poetry, written specifically for or
published first in the periodical.
Series - Three or
more articles on a related topic that appear in a single
issue or several issues of the same periodical. The content
of the articles is clearly linked. If a series appeared
in more than one calendar year, the majority of the issues
must have appeared in 2008.
Newsletter/eNewsletter
- A print or electronic publication consisting of articles
that feature clear reporting and a functional design organized
around a cohesive purpose. Special
entry requirement: submit three consecutive issues from
2009.
Article Design -
The complete design of an article as it complements the
editorial content of a specific article.
Cover - A cover design
that clearly conveys the publication's personality, character,
and/or theme.
Whole
Publication -
The overall design of a periodical as it complements and
enhances the editorial content and publication.
Illustration - A
drawing, artist's rednering, graphs and charts, or computer-generated
art that illustrates a story.
Photograph - A single
photograph that conveys emotion or interaction in a way
that elicits response and supports the educational content.
Visual Story - A
series of photographs and/or illustrations that tell a
story.
Periodical of the Year
- Publications published on a cycle that supplement learning
in the classroom or at home. Special
entry requirement: please submit three consecutive issues
from 2009 and the publication mission statement.
Anniversary/Commemorative
Edition - A periodical published as a standalone
anniversary edition, commemorative edition, or special
supplement. Publications are produced and paid for by
an education group, institution, periodical, or publisher
without an outside sponsor.
Most Improved - This
category recognizes a periodical's dramatic progress in
the standards and quality of editorial and design elements
over time. Special entry requirement:
submit two separate issues spanning a maximum of 24 months,
the first showing the publication "then" and
the second showing a 2009 publication date. On a separate
sheet of paper state the reasons for and the nature of
the changes.
One-Theme Issue -
A periodical that devotes 50 percent or more of its feature
content to a single topic or issue, including visual elements
that carry the theme throughout the publication.
Sponsored Publication -
A periodical produced by an education group, institution,
periodical, or publisher that is paid for wholly or in
part by another organization or business. While the publication
acknowledges the sponsor, it presents educational material
with integrity, focusing on the issues or issues without
intrusive promotion of the sponsor's products.

Professional Development
These are products directed at the education professional and contain
information on classroom management, instructional techniques,
and education theory and practice.
Differentiated
Instruction - Products that are designed
to take into account students' varying background
knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning,
and interests. They provide a model or process to
aid in teaching and learning for students of differing
abilities in the same class.
Classroom/Time
Management - Products that deal with the handling
of material over the course of the day and how to properly
manage a student's learning so that they stay on task
and do not fall behind during a normal school day.
Curriculum/Instruction
- Products in this category provide growth and professional
development for the teacher in their curriculum
planning and implementation, instructional strategies,
and content understanding and comprehension. Products
should be for individual growth and/or in-service
training. Entries may provide case studies, activity
suggestions, charts, example student work/portfolios,
and other strategies for improving curriculum or
instruction in the classroom.
Guided Reading -
Guided reading resources provide strategies that help students
of all grade levels become better readers. They support teachers
who work with small groups of readers as they learn to use
various reading strategies (context clues, letter and sound
relationships, word structure, etc.). They also provide the
framework to ensure that students are able to apply strategies
to make meaning from print.
Education Equity -
Products on equity education are designed to ensure all students
have equal opportunities in education regardless of their race,
national origin, gender, or special needs.
Assessment Tools -
These tools are used to assess a student's development in school.
They also provide tips and aids for teachers to help them classify
their students according to their own instructional needs.
Parent & Community
Involvement -
Products that enhance parent and community involvement through
activities, clubs, and social programs. This includes school-based
programs as well as how-to methods of teaching and encouraging
student to become more active in their community.
School Improvement -
Products that demonstrate solutions that help improve struggling
schools, increase student achievement, and ensure long-term
learning.
Learning Styles (including brain-based
learning and multiple intelligences) -
These products support the following learning styles:
Multiple
Intelligences: Nurturing the eight different
intelligences to account for a broader range of potential
Brain Based Learning: Using the knowledge
of how the brain works to understand how it impacts what
kinds of learning activities are most effective.
Technology & New Media
Something
in the technology field that is new or different that has
been developed in order to aid the education field.
Websites -
How is the website used to further education and technology. This category
is judged based not on the content, but on the manner in which the content is
delivered.
Portals -
A searchable site that functions as a point of access to
educational information on the Internet. It can be either
education focused in general or have an education section.
Social Media -
The use of electronic and Internet tools for the purpose
of sharing and discussing educational information and experiences
with other users. Social Media can also be utilized to
create online communities of students and/or teachers.
This can refer to activities that integrate technology,
social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures,
vidoes, and audio. Examples include blogs, webinars, podcasts,
and social networks.
Administrative Tools -
Online materials that assist educators and/or administrators
in a specific administrative task or multiple tasks, for
examples, standards alignment, filtering, or grading. This
could also be software that provides a more comprehensive
solution for classroom, building, or district management.
Examples include student information systems and information
management systems.
Assessment Tools -
Tools that assist educators in assessing individual students
so that they can be grouped according to instructional needs.
Alignment Tools -
Tools to help educators align their current curricula with
a school's or state's academic content standards for English
language arts, mathematics, science, and social studeis.
Educational Toy/Game -
Physical or web-based toys and games whose main function
is to teach a subject area. They can appear as toys or in
a game format, but not as a book.
