How The Program Works
A total of six awards will be presented—three awards for
overall student publications, and three for an individual piece
of student nonfiction writing. Winners will be chosen in elementary,
middle, and high school categories.
WHOLE PUBLICATION
All student publications—newspapers, magazines, literary
magazines that include nonfiction—are eligible for the “best
student publication” award.
Each publication will be judged
on its overall quality, which begins with good writing and design
and includes timeliness and service to the community. The main
criteria used in judging each entry include the following:
- crisp, clear, interesting writing;
- engaging display type (headlines, decks, pull quotes);
- clean, attractive layout of pages; effective use of photos and
illustrations;
- consistent use of grammatical principles.
Judges will also take into account whether the publication includes
a variety of voices; attempts to reflect diversity of opinion;
and presents information accurately and fairly. Any electronic
complement to the student publication—such
as an official student-created Web site—will also
be considered in judging the entry.
INDIVIDUAL STUDENT WRITING
The Student Publishing Awards celebrate the fact that everyone
has a story, and these individual awards honor student writing
that tells a true story in an accurate and exciting way. Any piece
of nonfiction writing between 500 and 2,500 words is eligible.
The article or essay need not have been published. Each
entry will be judged according to the following criteria:
- crisp writing, accurate information, and a compelling narrative
- engaging opening paragraph
- proper grammar and principles of good writing and/or reporting
- rich use of language
- satisfying ending
An individual piece of student writing must be nonfiction (for
example, a memoir, an essay, or a reported story about a news event).
The entry need not come directly from the school, but an adult
(teacher, parent, or guardian) must sign the entry
form.
